March Pool House by Source Architects is an addition to a 2017 renovation of a heritage property in central Orange.

March Pool House is an addition to a previous restoration of a heritage home on a plot in Orange in the Central Tablelands of NSW, west of Sydney. Source Architects was reengaged to complete the addition to create a detached structure that maintained the language of the primary dwelling while providing an opportunity for refuge and withdrawal.

The pavilion houses an indoor pool, a garage, gym and indoor sauna, nestled neatly into a curated garden by Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture. The exterior is made from rendered walls and steel fascias, blackbutt timber batten cladding, referencing the expression of a Japanese bathhouse. Simple but striking, the rectilinear form cuts through the landscape like a sculpture.

Inside is befittingly minimal, but with textures that exude luxury and calm. Slab dolomite stone and granite flooring recall the image of ancient Roman baths, while western red cedar lining the walls and recessed brass skirting inject a sense of contemporary elegance and texture to the space.

The sauna is richly tactile and intimate, with cedar benches and custom back rests. Throughout, the services have been cleverly concealed, from the recessed LED strip lighting to the sound systems, eliminating any evidence of clutter and utility from this minimalist oasis.

A great skylight has been cut into the ceiling directly above the pool, creating a “monastic” quality to the space, and providing a dynamic canvas for cloud play and stargazing, and casting expressive light across the water. The pool itself is surrounded by slabs of dolomite and lined in aquamarine Ezzari glass mosaic tiles. From a horizontal incision in the stone masonry, concealed waterfall languidly spills out.

The pavilion engages thoughtfully with the landscape, opening up to the garden through a monolithic steel framed cavity sliding door. Although on the main allotment, the pavilion acts as a precious retreat from the main house, oriented to shield the user from other onsite activity.

March Pool House is shortlisted in the 2022 NSW Country Division Architecture Awards for interior and small project architecture.
